Roles
How to chat with the AI as an expert or a character, and how to create your own role.
A role is a personality the assistant answers in: a legal advisor, a tutor, a copywriter or Sherlock Holmes. Each role has a name, a portrait, instructions, a greeting and its own model. Roles come with a subscription: anyone can browse them, and starting a chat with a role or creating your own takes a subscription.
Where to find them
- “Roles” in the sidebar, or the Roles page.
- The “Role” item in the composer’s “+” menu starts a new chat with a role without leaving the page.
- Both can be turned on or off in Settings → Personalization.
- Roles are rolling out gradually. If you don’t see them in the sidebar yet, open the Roles page and they’ll show up right away.
Ready-made roles
Helpers — Legal Advisor, Translator, Language Tutor, Copywriter, Mock Interviewer, Kind Listener and Tutor — and characters, from Sherlock Holmes to Grandma Rose. Click “Start chat” and the role opens the conversation with its greeting.
Your own role
- On the Roles page, click “Create role”, or “Make my own based on this” on a ready-made role.
- Fill in the name and “Personality and instructions”: who they are, how they talk, what they do and what they don’t. The greeting and short description are optional.
- Pick the model the role answers on.
- Portrait: “Upload photo” or “Generate” — the AI draws one from the role’s name and description, up to 20 portraits a day. Without a portrait, the role shows a letter monogram.
You can create up to 100 roles of your own.
How a role chat works
- A role stays with its chat and keeps its personality for the whole conversation. For a different role, start a new chat.
- Role replies use your limits the same way a regular chat on the same model does: models that use Charge spend Charge.
- If you delete a role, its chats stay and continue as regular chats.
- If your subscription ends, your roles and their chats are kept, and you can continue talking to a role once you renew.
- A role plays a character — double-check important facts, especially legal and medical ones.
